Sherry Hamilton Memorial GT Educator Award
The Sherry Hamilton Memorial GT Educator Award is SAGE’s highest honor for educators, recognizing a recipient who demonstrates commitment, experience, leadership, and a creative approach in gifted education, reflecting the spirit of the late Sherry Hamilton (GCISD GT Educator and early SAGE supporter who passed away in 2017). The recipient receives a $500 award, generously funded by Mr. Garry Hamilton and The Hamilton Family.
Nominations for 2025 Sherry Hamilton Memorial GT Educator of the Year Award

SAGE announced eight educators nominated for the award. All nominated educators were invited to apply by the deadline of July 31 for the $500 award. Applicants are judged by SAGE Lifetime Members using a rubric. Nominees for the 2025 cycle included: Leigh Ballard, Maggie Bell, Sarah Ganus, Patton Garay, Dr. Wynette Griffin, Ashley Millheim, Karen Otto, and Mike Otto. The 24-25 recipient, Michael Otto, was announced around this time.
Congratulations to Dr. Cheryl Taliaferro: 2023 Sherry Hamilton Educator of the Year!

The 2023 recipient was Dr. Cheryl Taliaferro, ASPIRE Academy District Liaison. The award recognized her deep commitment, extensive knowledge, and support for all GT programs and educators. Nominations highlighted her work as a mentor, her talent for developing curriculum that meets the needs of highly gifted learners, and her instrumental role in helping ASPIRE gain national recognition, contributing to three students being accepted to Harvard that year.

- 2021 Recipient: Amanda Guthrie (ASPIRE AP Modern World History and ASPIRE AP US History, Grapevine High School)
- 2020 Recipient: Angie Connell (GT Specialist, Heritage Elementary)
The nomination window for 2021 closed on February 15, 2021.
Past Award Recipients (2018 & 2019)
The Sherry Hamilton Memorial Award has recognized the following educators:
- 2019 Recipient: Sterling Bristow (ASPIRE Mathematics, Cross Timbers Middle). Recognized for masterful differentiation, quiet leadership, creativity, and contributions to math education (co-leading UIL/MATHCOUNTS teams).
- 2018 Recipient (Inaugural): Allyson Dickinson (ASPIRE 2nd Grade, Glenhope Elementary).
SAGE Educator Grants (Classroom & Professional Development)
SAGE provides financial grants for classroom materials, professional development, and conference attendance to support GT educators in the district.
Educator Grants and Gifts for August, Sept

Grants supported various initiatives at the start of the year:
- Funding for Quizzes for greater engagement in ASPIRE history.
- Travel/registration for teachers to attend the Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST).
- Support for the ASPIRE student advisory council retreat.
- Purchase of Jacob's Ladder reading materials for GT Lead elementary classes.
- Funding for a digital platform to enhance writing and grammar skills in ASPIRE ELA classes (grades 3-8).
SAGE also provided new teacher welcome gifts to: Dexter Suarez (Glenhope EL ASPIRE 3rd), Joe Parthemore (Glenhope EL ASPIRE 4th), Karen Otto (Cross Timbers MS ASPIRE Humanities), Trey Campbell (Cross Timbers MS ASPIRE Science), and Kayla Glowacki (GHS ASPIRE AP Econ).
SAGE GT Educator Grants – Winter 2019

- GCISD Department of Advanced Academics: Grant toward attending the Harvard Summer Conference on College Admissions.
- Angie Connell (Heritage Elementary GT Specialist): Grant for STEM games.
- Colleen Patton (ASPIRE 2nd Grade, Glenhope Elementary): Grant for two microphones for podcasting.
- Tiffani Griffard (ASPIRE 1st Grade, Glenhope Elementary): Grant toward differentiated guided math materials.
- Julie McConathy (Latin Teacher, District): Grant for vocabulary “word strips” classroom materials.
- Melissa Carpenter (ASPIRE Middle School Science, Cross Timbers Middle): Grant for “stress break” classroom materials.
- Susan Stackfleth and Tressa Maddux (Grapevine Elementary): Grants to cover registration for the J Taylor Depth and Complexity Conference.
- Charlotte Weinstein (ASPIRE 5th Teacher, Glenhope Elementary): Grant for a classroom set of "Banish Boring Words!" books for writing enrichment.
- Jennifer Edwards & the Cross Timbers Middle School ASPIRE team: Grant toward games for Tech-Free Tuesdays Wolf Time.
GT Educator Grant Recipients, August 2019
Publication Date: August 21, 2019
Grants were awarded for conference attendance and classroom materials:
- Professional Development: Grants for Dr. Cheryl Taliaferro (ASPIRE Liaison), Kameron Jones-Balsley (ASPIRE 6th Humanities), and Gypsy Mishoe (Advanced Academics Liaison) to present a session and attend the National Association for Gifted Children 2019 Conference in Albuquerque.
- Classroom Materials: Grants for Tim Spitsberg (ASPIRE 7th Humanities), Melissa Carpenter (ASPIRE Biology), and Kristina Callaway (GT Specialist at Silver Lake Elementary).
Spring 2018 SAGE Educator Grants
Publication Date: May 17, 2018
Key grants included:
- A grant to Ronda Bennett (GT Specialist for Timberline Elementary) for the purchase of Envision real-world independent, interdisciplinary projects from Mind Vine Press.
- The purchase of the Iowa Acceleration Scale Manual for GCISD to use district-wide to guide decisions regarding whole-grade acceleration (grade-skip).
