🌟 Supporting Twice-Exceptional (2e) Learners

Twice-Exceptional (2e) students are gifted individuals who also have a learning difference, such as ADHD, Dyslexia, autism, speech impairment, or other unique educational needs. These students learn in ways that are the exception to the norm, and their dual exceptionalities require specialized support to ensure their gifts are nurtured while their challenges are addressed.

Key Focus Areas and Support

Understanding the 2e Student

GC-SAGE provides resources to help parents and educators understand the complexity of 2e learners. Many gifted children exhibit asynchrony, meaning their emotional and intellectual development may not align. This can lead to specific social-emotional challenges:

  • Anxiety and Worry: Gifted children are often perfectionists, which can lead to increased stress, irritability, and a fear of trying new things, especially when they are not adequately challenged.
  • Boredom: A lack of adequate intellectual stimulation can result in behavioral struggles or a feeling of being alone.

We share expert guidance, such as tip sheets from the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), to help parents understand and support their 2e children through these unique behavioral and developmental challenges.

Community, Advocacy, and Events

GC-SAGE actively works to build a supportive environment and advocate for 2e students within the district:

  • Exceptional Children Committee: We supported the establishment of the GCISD Council of PTAs "Exceptional Children Committee" to champion students with learning differences of all kinds.
  • 2e Support Group: We facilitate a monthly support group for parents and teachers to discuss the challenges and successes of raising and teaching twice-exceptional children.
  • Educational Screenings: We host free community events, such as screenings of "2e: The Movie," in partnership with the GCISD Department of Advanced Academics, to promote a better understanding of Twice-Exceptionality among parents, teachers, and the broader community.
