Volunteer service FAQs

What is the purpose of the GC-SAGE Board?

The SAGE Board is the governing body of the association and as such, sets strategic policy, provides general oversight and actively pursues association goals.

Who is the ideal SAGE Board candidate?

SAGE strives for a Board that includes individuals that reflect the diversity of its membership. This includes consideration of geographic areas, experience and background, and areas of expertise. The Board reflects various stakeholder groups in gifted education, including ASPIRE, GT Lead, elementary and secondary schools, 2E, etc.

What is the role of the SAGE Board member?

Board members are the link between the organization and the membership. They are responsible for strategic thinking, planning and evaluating on behalf of the association. As a 100% volunteer driven organization, board members are expected to assist in executing SAGE programs and supporting fellow board members with needs in their area of responsibility.

Is there a membership requirement for serving on the SAGE Board?

Board members must hold and maintain an active, SAGE Membership in the association for the length of service.

How often does the SAGE Board meet?

The SAGE Board meets on a monthly basis, generally held on a recurring basis (e.g., third Wednesday of every month). The monthly meeting is usually scheduled for 1 ½ - 2 hours. The Board also participates in an annual strategic planning meeting each summer to prepare for the upcoming year and this meeting is typically a one day 6-hour meeting or two-day 3 hour commitment.

What are the qualifications for serving on the Board?

SAGE Bylaws specify that current, active SAGE membership is a minimum requirement to be considered for board service. To be eligible for the President position, you must have served on the Board for at least one year.

How much time does board service require?

Although board members must be willing to invest time in preparing for and thoughtfully participating in board meetings, the time commitment is not onerous. The SAGE Board meets monthly for approximately 2 hours. These meetings may take place in person or virtually. Additional obligations also include a Leadership Planning meeting held in June/July and attendance at most SAGE events is ideal, because we want our board to be visible and accessible to all SAGE members.

What is the role of the Campus/ASPIRE representative?

Campus/ASPIRE Reps are the link between the organization and the membership. Three key requested duties of SAGE Campus Representatives are to:

  1. attend every monthly Campus Rep meeting and participate on behalf of all of the gifted students in your school;
  2. establish a collaborative working relationship with the administration and the GT teachers at your campus; and to
  3. connect with parents on your campus.

Additional suggested Campus Representative activities: Promote and attend SAGE programs as your schedule allows; with help from SAGE, host a meet-up for your GT families; and help support SAGE efforts by identifying your particular interest in a special area of SAGE’s mission including 2e, teacher appreciation, underrepresented populations in GT, social/emotional, legislative advocacy, to name just a few.

Is there a membership requirement for serving as a Campus/ASPIRE Representative?

Campus and ASPIRE Representatives must hold and maintain an active, SAGE Membership in the association for the length of service.

How often do Campus/ASPIRE Representatives meet?

Campus/ASPIRE Representatives meet on a monthly basis, generally held on a recurring basis (e.g., second Monday of every month). The monthly meeting is usually scheduled for 1 ½ - 2 hours. The time commitment outside of meetings is not onerous and reps are asked to communicate back and forth with their respective campuses as their schedule permits.
